What time should you water your lawn?
Choosing a watering schedule is essential for proper grass growth and lawn health. Generally, early morning (between 4 – 8 am) is best because the soil is more absorbent, and there’s little to no evaporation because of the cooler temperatures. While you can water later in the day, it’s always best to allow the ground to cool before watering.
How often should you water your lawn?
For most Utah homes, you need, on average, one to one and a half inches of water, which is enough to get to the essential sections of your lawn. During the cooler months, you can water your lawn twice a week. If the weather is warmer, touch the soil first. If it’s dry, you can fit in an extra watering.
What do you do if it rains after a fertilizer or weed killer application?
Lawn applications are most effective when they have time to seep into your soil. If it’s a fertilizer or insect control application, the rain can help improve effectiveness. However, if it’s a weed killer and you don’t see results after a few weeks, we may need to retreat your lawn.
Do you need a pre-emergent application?
Can you plant grass seeds after a pre-emergent treatment?
A pre-emergent treatment may suppress seed germination, so it isn’t suggested to plant seeds after a treatment. Instead, you can always plant them earlier in the year and give them time to grow. After you’ve mowed the lawn several times, the root growth should be strong enough to handle a pre-emergence treatment.
You should be fine planting new grass seed in the fall, but if you need more help or advice, please contact our staff
Do dull blades hurt grass?
The short answer is yes, but the why is important. Sharp blades create a clean cut that promotes new growth and improves moisture retention. If your mower blades are dull, it can tear the grass, which leads to unhealthy looking grass and the risk of diseases.

What is thatch build-up?
At the base of your grass are a layer of dead grass stems, roots, and shoots that can build up at the soil level in your yard. In most lawns, a thatch layer is normal for a healthy lawn. However, when that layer becomes too thick, it can create drainage and nutrient issues.
It’s important to note that removing grass clippings won’t have much of an impact on the thatch layer. Fresh grass decomposes quickly and can provide nutrients for the grass.
One way to help with the thatch layer is aeration, which our lawn care experts can help with.
How can core aeration help your lawn?
Core aeration is the process of perforating your lawn with small holes that can help improve airflow and allow water to reach deeper into your yard. We use specially designed tools and machines that create a consistent series of coring holes, helping to avoid any root damage. This process helps grow a healthy lawn, and it can also help fertilizer and other nutrients reach deeper into the grass. It also prevents soil compaction and prevents thatch buildup, which are all key to a healthy lawn.
Do I need to be home at the time of the application?
At Guardian Pest & Lawn, our goal is to make service as easy as possible. We will schedule an application appointment to work with your schedule, and if you’re not home, not a problem! Our technicians will complete the application, leave the invoice and watering instructions, and also mark off the area with a flag so you know where the application was made.
